The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal is André Le Nôtre's most original design. Covering 23 hectares, 60m in width, 1700m east-west and 1000m north-south in length, the Grand Canal is one of the best places to take in the full beauty and grandeur of the estate as a whole. Laid out between 1668 and 1679, Louis XIV's architect took great care over the dimensions in order to offer the perfect perspective.
Where can I hire a bicycle?
Take advantage of the Grand Canal and the vast expanses of the Park by hiring a bicycle. Bicycles are for hire next to the La Flottille restaurant (also at the Grille de la Reine and at the Porte Saint-Antoine).

Where to walk on horseback?
Marly lies 7 km north-west of Versailles, halfway between Versailles and the palace of Saint Germain en Laye, and was Louis XIV’s second great work. The king used it as a residence for leisure and kept access to it restricted to only a few privileged courtiers. Here, Jules Hardouin-Mansart demonstrated his dual talent as an architect and gardener by creating one of the most original works of the 17th century. The palace of Marly was gradually demolished in the early 19th century. The park and other features, such as the drinking pool with its two ponds, still remain today.
